About Us
The Calgary Round-Up Band is one of Canada's oldest and finest Junior Marching Show Bands. They are well known as Goodwill Ambassadors for Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. The Calgary City Police formed the band as the Calgary Schools Safety Patrol Band in 1956. In 1979, due to manpower constraints, the operating responsibility fell to the parents, and the name was changed to the Calgary Round-Up Band.
The band has provided the youth of the Calgary area with musical training and a strong sense of self-discipline for over 50 years. Members travel from all over southern Alberta to participate in Calgary’s most comprehensive musical performance program for junior high students.
The band travels each summer to promote our province and in the past six years has performed in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and Australia as well as at Seattle’s SEAFAIR, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Disneyland, at three CFL football halftime shows and two Major league baseball games. In 2006 the band did an extensive tour to Sweden and Denmark to celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary. This summer the band is traveling to Dever Colorado and partaking in a performance at a Thunderbirds Air Show, Drums Along the Rockies a DCI event, and a performance at Sixflags.
It is the goal of the band for every member to develop a lifelong appreciation for the value of music in his/her life. Through rehearsals, we hope to instill a strong sense of self-discipline, self-motivation, and an inner drive for excellence that will become apparent in all aspects of life. From the performance opportunities, it is hoped that members will gain self-confidence and the knowledge that there is no obstacle they cannot overcome, if they are willing to work hard and utilize their talent. Through social relationships within the band, lifelong memories and friendships flourish due to challenges and adversities members overcome together. It is hoped that members will view their band membership as an experience that has had a positive effect on their lives for years to come.
